Note from Rachel Swayze, our Outreach Director: While visiting a church to share about the ministry of the Pregnancy Care Center, I heard the testimony of a lady who braved her past and shared this story. Touched, and inspired to press on in the work because of her story, I asked her if I could share it with you. She agreed. This is her story, not unlike millions of other stories, mostly untold. Let it encourage, bless and challenge you.

My Story

By Judy

Childhood Dreams

When I was 16, I was counting the years until I would be old enough to have a family; a husband, kids, etc. I would think, I’ll be 20 in four years; that ought to be old enough to get married and have a family. I assumed that it would just automatically happen for me.

However, when I was in my 20’s, I stopped going to church, started making poor choices and ended up with broken relationships.

Fork in the Road

At about 32 years old, I discovered I was pregnant. My mother was a perfectionist who thought her children should be perfect. When I did something that disappointed her, she would say, “Ohh, Juuuudy…” I grew to cringe every time I heard that. I felt that I had disappointed her too many times in my life. I didn’t want to do that again with this pregnancy. What was I going to do? I didn’t think I could face her judgment. There was only one solution; I could hide this situation. I would have to get an abortion.

When I went into the abortion clinic, they told me they could schedule me right away, and not to worry, at this early stage it really isn’t a child, but more like mucus[1]…what a lie! But I made up my mind to never regret this decision. I made the choice to have an abortion, feeling that it was the only option. After all, if I brought a child into my life, it would be no life at all for me or the child. Besides, I couldn’t afford to take care of myself, let alone a child too. Besides…I have plenty of time to have another child.

Life went on and I had more and more broken relationships. I was miserable, and finally hit bottom. I couldn’t hold any relationship together! Finally I decided to come back to church and to the Lord, and my life began to get back on track spiritually. That is when the regrets really came: big and strong. I realized that I had taken a life! How could God forgive me?! How could I forgive myself?

Too late

My biological clock was winding down. Finally the time came when I realized I could not have any children…ever.

In 1980 my niece was born. That would have been the year my own child would have been born. I kept watching her through the years, thinking, what would my child have been like? Would it have been a boy or girl? Mother’s Day was the most emotional day of the whole year. I would weep because I wanted so badly to be a mother, and it would never happen now. I wanted someone to say, “Hi Mom!” and “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!” or, “I love you, Mom” or even, “I hate you, Mom.” …but that would never happen now.

Redemption

The Lord encouraged me greatly with a word that said, “The woman with the empty womb will have many children.” He has forgiven me and healed my pain, and He has blessed me with 15 grandchildren. Only through God can we be healed, and I am so grateful! When we sin and do something against God’s will He can forgive us and heal us, but He doesn’t take away the scars. There are there to remind us that we must continue to do His will. Only doing God’s will can we have the life He has planned for us, which is a much better life than we can create on our own.

Note: Abortion can affect a woman’s life for years afterward, and every woman deals with that loss differently. There are struggles and pain deep within her heart – a silent, secret grief for her lost child. Post Abortion Stress manifests itself in many ways, but usually includes the inability to process all the painful emotions surrounding the abortion and find peace and healing. Doctors have found that an alarming number of post-abortive women suffer from psychological effects. If you or someone you know has experienced an abortion healing is possible! There is no longer a need for you to suffer in lonely silence.

H.E.A.R.T. – Healing Encouragement for Abortion-Related Trauma

The confidential, non-judgmental atmosphere of these groups provide biblical perspectives and relational support for women sorting through the trauma of a past abortion. Compassionate, trained leaders guide each meeting, focusing on the Word of God, helping women experience God’s infinite forgiveness, healing and freedom. Call the Canby Center at 503-266-2673 or Molalla Center at 503-829-2673.

Many of you may be familiar with this enigmatic phrase, "going medical," but for those of you who think it means a trip to the ER, let me explain. For close to 40 years pregnancy help centers have offered counsel and encouragement to people facing unexpected pregnancies. As abortion has increased in popularity and acceptance, "pro-lifers" have responded to the great crisis facing the unborn and their parents by taking drastic steps to be able to provide free ultrasounds to reveal the truth of the developing baby within the mother's womb. When abortion-minded parents see their own little one inside, moving, heart beating, alive and eager to be loved, they change their minds and choose life for the baby over 95% of the time...
